Xeomin is a product used to treat fine lines and is very similar to the more established brands Botox and Dysport. The main variation between Xeomin, Botox and Dysport is that Xeomin contains just one ingredient, which is botulinum toxin A. The manufacturing process is slightly different for all three, which leads to some inherent, subtle differences during clinical practice.
Xeomin is considered a naked injectable, which means that it doesn’t have any additives. An advantage of a pure-form injectable is that the body is less likely to become resistant to it.
Xeomin is the only one of these three injectables that don’t need to be refrigerated before use, because of its absence of additives.
The price of Xeomin is roughly the same as for Botox while Dysport is a little less than both.
Patients average about 20 units of Xeomin per visit, the same as Botox and 40 units per visit for Dysport.
Xeomin has the slowest onset action of the three as Dysport onsets in 24 hours, Botox in 72 hours while Xeomin takes four days.
Xeomin is no more convenient than Botox or Dysport for cosmetic purposes. The product does lack complex proteins that can help prevent the antibody formation or resistance in patients being treated for neuromuscular issues.
Neurotoxins scatter differently, in part because Botox and Dysport have protective proteins clustered around the active part of their molecule, while Xeomin does not have protective proteins.
Botox has many protective proteins and weighs slightly more than Dysport. Being heavier than Xeomin, these products will have less precision, which is only an issue for treatments for tiny areas.
Regardless of their similarities, Botox and Dysport are not interchangeable because the products are injected and dosed differently.
